Has Taylor Swift Begun the Downfall of YouTube Music Videos?

YouTube and Billboard are officially at war, and Taylor Swift just fired the first shot for the artists.
On February 6, Swift released the music video for “Opalite” (from The Life of a Showgirl). But for the first time in her career, the “global premiere” didn’t happen on YouTube. Instead, fans had to head to Apple Music or Spotify to see the 90s-inspired rom-com visual.
This wasn’t just a platform exclusive; it was a calculated defensive maneuver. Since YouTube stopped sharing data with Billboard last month, a billion views on YouTube now count for zero on the official charts. Swift uploading to Apple Music and Spotify first was clearly to prioritize her place on the Billboard charts. As other artists follow, it may mean uploading music videos on YouTube no longer takes priority.
